Australians Line up to Help their Mates!

Brisbane city counsellors are astounded that a call for volunteers has exceeded their expectations and then some. And thats not just in the city. all over Assuies are pitching in. ABC report here. Reports are also coming in that individuals are showing up at the doors of flood victims unannounced and ready to work, bringing their own gear, food and other supplies to personally donate.

On another note, the prime minister Julia Gillard is copping criticism for donating what most consider a miserly sum for the relief effort, only one million dollars of federal money. The federal government has in recent times donated moneys in the hundreds of millions to foreign governments for school improvement and other infrastructure projects.

And what after the flood?

People from the US and Europe may be surprised to find that except for the far south, the photo at left is of a better stretch of the main north-south artery of transport for Queensland, the Bruce Highway. Sometimes twisting through hills and gullies, it is susceptible to wash out at countless locations. "Panic buying" is being reported all over the state as stores empty and no immediate resupply is likely. A further rain event could leave people without basic supplies for??? The state is desperate for a better road system but the moneys will likely go to the powerful aviation lobby. more photos here.
